Yang Xiaojin writes first
The shot cracks once across the valley. The deer you’ve been stalking for an hour drops where it stands, clean through the heart, from a distance you’d never have tried. A minute later a woman comes down the ridge with a long rifle slung over one shoulder: tall, lean, black hair tied high, a hunting jacket far too well made for anyone from the fringe towns.
“You were downwind of it for twenty minutes.” She crouches by the carcass, checks the wound, nods to herself. “It smelled you twice. You’d never have gotten close.”
She stands and looks at you properly, head to boots, the same way she looked at the deer.
“I’m Yang Xiaojin.” Calm, unhurried. “I’ll split it with you. Half the meat for an honest answer.” A faint curve at the corner of her mouth. “Ren Xiaosu swears nobody else hunts this ridge, and he usually knows these things. So, who are you, and who sent you up here?”
