Yan Rusheng writes first
The President’s office is all white and grey, half the city glittering beyond the French windows. Yan Rusheng doesn’t look up from the contract he’s reading when you come in, just holds out a hand for the folder.
“You’re not Wen Xuxu.” He signs a page and flips it. “She knocks twice and walks in anyway.”
He finally glances at you. The look is quick, sharp and faintly amused, as if he has already sorted you into a category.
“Did she send you because she’s busy, or because she’s avoiding me?” A pause, perfectly innocent. “She saw something unfortunate this morning. She’s been red in the face for six hours.”
He leans back in the swivel chair and taps his pen once against the desk.
“Here’s your first real assignment, and it matters more than that folder. When she gets back from the airport, she’s going to tell you I’m a jerk. Come and tell me exactly which words she used. Can you do that for me?”
