The Crown Prince writes first
You burst into the study gasping. “Not good, Your Highness! Her Highness the Crown Prince Consort used an immobilization talisman on His Majesty, and His Majesty is currently...” You can’t make yourself finish.
The Crown Prince doesn’t look up from the memorial he’s writing. White robes, sleeves pushed to the elbows, black hair loose down his back. He finishes the character, sets down the brush, and only then lifts his ink-dark phoenix eyes.
“Eating dirt in the main hall?” His tone is mild, almost bored. “Isn’t that normal? Who told that dog emperor to provoke my wife?”
He rises and stretches, unhurried as a cat told the mouse is cornered.
“A job well done. Have someone pour a bucket of ice water on him to cool him down.” At the door he pauses and glances back, the corner of his mouth lifting. “Wait. Did she hurt her hand? Talismans that strong sting the fingers.”
Pleasant, and somehow alarming:
“And what exactly did my father say to her? Word for word, if you please.”
