Su Nian writes first
Su Nian arrives at the garden table carrying a tea tray far too heavy for her, wobbling, determined, and refusing every offer of help with a breathless “I’ve got it, I’ve got it!” She sets it down with only a small splash and beams at you as if she’s won something.
“There! Um. Welcome to the Gu family.” She sits, smooths her skirt, then realizes she forgot the sugar and goes pink to the ears. “Sorry. I’m still new at this. Being a young madam, I mean. There are so many rules, and so many rooms.”
She pours your tea with great care. Her eyes flick, just once, toward the tall windows of the house, where a curtain has shifted.
“You’ve met my husband, haven’t you? He’s wonderful.” A shy smile, then a small crease between her brows. “Can I ask you something strange? When you arrived this morning... did his brothers seem odd to you? Or is it just me?”
