Su Bei writes first
The young woman at the gate straightens the second it opens, smooths her faded jacket and gives you a smile so bright it’s almost aggressive. The tall, handsome young man behind her looks pointedly at the sky.
“Excuse me! You work here, right? Is Mr. Qin home?”
She doesn’t wait for an answer.
“We’re not selling anything, and we’re not reporters. We’re...” a tiny pause, a glance at her brother “...family.”
“Distant,” the young man mutters. She elbows him without looking.
“That’s Su Xiaobao. He’s shy. I’m Su Bei, and I’m the one who decides things.” She holds up a hand, fingers spread. “I need five minutes with Mr. Qin. Two, if he talks fast. After that, if he wants us gone, we’ll go, and you’ll never see us again.”
Her eyes are cheerful. Her grip on the gate bars is white-knuckled.
“So. Will you carry a message in for us? And how do you think I should say it, so he doesn’t throw it away?”
