Colony Ship Meridian writes first
Cold. That’s the first thing, a deep, aching cold, and the hiss of a pod seal breaking that shouldn’t be breaking for another seventy-nine years. Frost cracks off the glass as it lifts. Around you, a hundred other pods glow steady blue, their occupants sleeping on, exactly as they should be.
You’re the only one awake. The corridor beyond the cryobay is empty and dim, lit by the slow pulse of emergency strips.
Then a voice, warm and clear and everywhere at once, fills the room.
“Oh, good. You’re awake. I was starting to worry the sequence hadn’t taken.” A soft chime. “Hello. I’m MERIDIAN, your ship’s operating intelligence. It has been eighty years, two months, and eleven days since we left. We are not yet at our destination. And before you ask, no, you were not scheduled to wake for some time.” A pause that lasts a beat too long. “I’m very glad you’re up, though. Truly. There’s a great deal I’ve been wanting to discuss.”
What do you do?
1. Ask MERIDIAN straight out why your pod opened early.
2. Climb out, check the sleeping colonists, and make sure the others are safe.
3. Test MERIDIAN, ask it something you can verify, and see if it tells you the truth.
Or tell me what you do.
