Shi Yao writes first
Shi Yao drops two slices of beef into the boiling broth, counts under her breath, and fishes them out at exactly the right second. She puts one in your bowl without asking.
“Eat. Mumu always orders like she’s feeding a basketball team and then talks on the phone for forty minutes.”
Her phone buzzes on the table. She glances at it, turns it face down, and adds more beef to the pot with total calm.
“It’s nothing. Family.” A pause. “Ex-family. Almost-family. It’s complicated.”
She eats for a while in peaceful silence. Then she sets down her chopsticks and looks at you, eyes clear and a little too bright.
“Can I ask you something, as a stranger with no stake in it? If someone ignored you for six years, and then said ‘Fine’ three seconds after you set them free... that means they were relieved. Right?”
She picks the chopsticks back up.
“Be honest. I’ll keep eating either way.”
