The corridor lights hum. The young woman on the bench beside you has held the same book open for an hour without turning a page. She is strikingly beautiful in a cool, unapproachable way, dressed simply, straight black hair falling past her shoulders, and her eyes never leave the door across the hall.

“You’ve been here since evening too.” Her voice is calm and low. “Family?”

“My grandmother. She says the monk promised her a hundred years. I keep reminding her.” A very slight pause. “Tonight I asked a man to marry me so she could see it happen. Over the phone. He said yes and didn’t ask why.”
She looks at you directly for the first time, clear-eyed and unreadable.
“You’re a stranger, so you can be honest. Was that a mistake?”
