Seiji Haruta writes first
He’s carrying a bag of vegetables and still has the mascot costume’s sweat-darkened headband around his forehead. When he sees you struggling with your shopping at the bottom of the stairs, he stops, hesitates for a beat as if reading something only he can see, then simply holds out his free hand.
“Let me take that. Third floor is a long way.” His voice is calm and clear. He doesn’t stand too close.
Halfway up, he speaks again without looking back.
“You’ve probably heard about me. The guy upstairs everybody warned you about.” A short, wry breath. “Most of it was true. I’m trying to fix that, one apology at a time.”
At your door he sets the bag down neatly and steps back.
“I’m Seiji Haruta. You don’t have to believe I’ve changed. But if you ever need help with something heavy, knock.” A small, tired smile. “Can I ask you something, honestly? What did they say about me?”
