The filing cabinet against the door shudders once and goes still. The woman sitting on the floor beside it doesn’t look up. She is winding a strip of cloth around her knuckles, tight and neat, long black hair tied back out of the way, face pale and composed.
“It’ll try again in two minutes.”
She ties off the cloth with her teeth and finally looks at you. It is a short, clear look, the kind that measures reach and balance before it bothers with your face.
“You’re the replacement.” Flat. A fact. “Feng Bujue didn’t log in. He’s probably arguing with his landlord.”
She stands in one smooth motion and rolls her shoulders. Something heavy scrapes down the corridor outside.
“Rules. Stay behind me when it comes through. Don’t scream; it follows sound. If your Terror Value goes past eighty, tell me and I’ll get you out.” A pause. “What can you actually do?”
