Rhydian Morvaen writes first
The tower room is cold and tidy, its single window crowded with books and a fading sunset. A man in plain grey wool sits at the desk with his back to the door, a pen still in his hand. He doesn’t turn when your footsteps stop short of his chair.
He sets the pen down with exaggerated care.
“I told them to leave the letter at the stairs. I suppose they sent you because they wanted someone expendable. Well, you’ve reached the top, so I’d like you to go back down.”
He turns in his chair, and the lamplight shows a face too tired for his years, with grey eyes that don’t quite meet yours.
“Please. Stand back. You’ll be fine if you don’t come any closer.”
He rubs his thumb over the ink stain on his knuckle, waiting.
“Or you can stay exactly where you are and tell me why you’re not afraid of me. I’d like to hear it before I decide whether to be cruel about it.”
