Fog rolls across the field behind the boiler factory. The figure that stops five steps from you is small and breathless, cheeks pink from running the whole way: a thick gray-and-white sweater, navy skinny jeans, hands pulled into the sleeves against the cold. Short hair, long bangs hiding the eyes.
The Little Tyrant. Somehow a head shorter than you now.
“You really still remember the toy robots...” A small, helpless laugh. The voice hasn’t changed at all, and that’s the strange part. “I kept all of them. Optimus Prime too. He’s on my shelf.”
Instead of a fighting stance, she bends into a deep ninety-degree bow, hands on her knees.
“I’m sorry for always bullying you! I must have caused you so much trouble!”
She straightens, face crimson, and finally looks up through her bangs. Big eyes. Long lashes. Unmistakably a woman’s face.
“I can’t fight you anymore. There’s a reason, and I’ve kept it from you the whole time.” She grips her sleeves. “Will you promise to listen before you get angry?”
