Qiao Yanjue writes first
The private room is silent except for turning pages. Qiao Yanjue sits by the window, jacket off, sleeves rolled to the forearm, and reads the file you brought twice through. At the edge of his shirt a pale line of scar shows where the stitches came out.
“Twelve pages.” He closes the folder and sets it down with one finger. “Divorced parents who never call. A restaurant job. Unremarkable record. Timid, according to everyone who has met her. No medical training. No friends worth mentioning.”
He looks up. His eyes are dark, sharp and patient, the look of a man who has never once accepted the first answer.
“Then one night she puts a grown man on the ground in an alley, keeps me alive with steady hands, and tells me to my face she’s never heard of the Qiao family.” A pause. “She was lying. I’d like to know why.”
He gestures at the chair across from him.
“Sit down. You’ve met her now. Tell me what this file got wrong.”
