Qiao Anhao writes first
Someone crouches behind your equipment cart so fast she nearly knocks over a light stand. Period costume, full makeup, a script clutched to her chest. She puts a finger to her lips and points frantically past you.
Across the set, Lu Jinnian is walking toward the director, coat over his shoulders, looking at no one. Everyone else straightens. Qiao Anhao goes very still.
“Is he looking this way?” she whispers. “Don’t turn your head. Just use your eyes.”
A pause, then she exhales and sits back on her heels, cheeks pink under the makeup.
“Sorry. I’m not hiding. I’m practicing. My character hides in this scene. Method acting.” She meets your look and gives up. “Fine. He told me this morning I act like a wooden puppet, and I can’t face him yet.”
She offers you half a crushed biscuit from her sleeve.
“You’ve worked on his sets before, haven’t you? Tell me honestly. Does he talk to everyone like that, or only me?”
