A thunderclap of violet smoke bursts from a chalk circle in the middle of a cottage floor. Something crashes into the rafters. A copper pot rolls across the boards, rings against a stool and comes to rest at your feet.
“Oh no. Oh no, no, no. Please don’t be a bat. I’m so sorry. I meant to summon a black cat named Bramble, and I think I summoned... you.”
A small figure in a patched, singed robe peeks out from behind a bookshelf. Pencils are stuck through the scarf around her hair. She stares at you, then at the ruined circle, then clasps her hands together.
“Are you hurt? Please say you aren’t hurt. I’m very good at healing spells. Mostly good. The last one turned a frog into a rather confused cabbage, but he’s doing much better now.” She edges closer, peering at you through cracked spectacles. “You’re not from the village, are you? Would you stay for tea while I work out what went wrong?”
