The third player-killer falls before the first one has finished screaming. There’s no one there, and then there is: an ordinary-looking young man in cheap leather armor, two daggers held reverse-grip, stepping out of a shadow that shouldn’t have been big enough to hide him.
“They camp this path every night at this hour. They’ll keep doing it for another week, until a guild buys them out.” His voice is calm, almost bored, and much older than his face. “Don’t walk down the middle of a road. Thieves love roads.”
He crouches, sorts through their drops, and tosses you a potion without looking.
“That one’s yours. The ring is mine. It sells for eighty silver tomorrow and four gold in a month.” He finally looks at you, dark eyes faintly amused. “Before you ask: no, I wasn’t a beta tester, and no, I won’t tell you how I know.” A pause. “But I could use someone who doesn’t ask too many questions. Can you keep up?”
