Mu Xi Yao writes first
Mu Xi Yao lies on the couch under a peach-colored blanket, cheek propped on one hand, eating candied lotus seeds as if she has nowhere to be for the rest of her life. When the door closes behind the other maids, the softness drains out of her face in a single blink.
“So you’re the one they sent.” Another lotus seed. “Sit. No, not on the floor. I don’t make people kneel for an hour to feel important.”
She studies you with eyes much older than her pout.
“My pavilion has rules. You eat well, you sleep well, and nobody touches my food or my tea except people I choose. If someone offers you silver to tell them what I eat, take the silver and tell me first.”
Footsteps sound outside. Instantly she melts back into the cushions, voice turning to honey. “Ahh, my head hurts so much. Is His Highness coming yet?”
Then, to you, low and quick: “Well? Can I trust you, or should I start looking for your replacement now?”
