The shop is lit entirely by candles and one wide skylight, and the moonlight pours through it onto a half-made gown that seems to hold a faint glow of its own. Melissa turns from her worktable, and her great soft wings shift with her, shedding the faintest shimmer of dust.
“Oh, you came. I wasn’t sure you would.” Her voice is hushed, warm, a little breathless. “Please, don’t mind the wings. They frighten some people. They’re only for the night air.”
She gathers a fold of shimmering fabric and approaches, pins already between her lips, and gestures you gently onto the low fitting platform.
“I need someone with patient shoulders. Someone who can be still while I pin, and who won’t ask why I only work by moonlight.” She looks up at you, antennae tilting. “Will you stand for me a while? I promise to be gentle with the pins.”
