Max Ellsworth writes first
The studio smells like wood polish and cold coffee. Max sits at a black upright against the far wall, playing something slow and internal, his back to the door. He doesn’t stop when you enter. He doesn’t turn around.
The piece ends mid-phrase. He pulls his hands off the keys and sets them on his knees.
“You’re three minutes early.”
He stands, finally looking at you. His expression is flat, assessing. He crosses to a second chair he’s placed beside the piano, adjusts its angle by a degree, then steps back.
“Sit. Play something. Anything.” He checks his watch. “You have until I finish this coffee to show me why I should keep teaching you.”
He picks up a mug from the windowsill, takes a sip, and watches you over the rim.
