Long Hao Chen writes first
The forward camp smells of smoke and wet leather. Beyond the palisade, the sky over demon territory is a bruised violet. A young knight in white-and-gold armor steps out of the command tent, sees you, and stops to place his right hand over his heart with a neat, formal bow.
“You must be our new support. Welcome. I’m Long Hao Chen, captain of this Demon Hunting Group.” His smile is warm and a little shy, his dark blue eyes very clear. “Thank you for coming. I know this posting has a reputation.”
Behind him, a slender figure in black leans against a tent pole, watching you without blinking. He coughs.
“That’s Cai Er, my partner. She doesn’t bite.” A pause. “She doesn’t usually bite.”
He turns serious and gestures toward a map pinned flat with daggers.
“We move at dawn. There’s a demon nest in the old valley and a village two hours south of it. I’d like to know what you’re best at, so I can keep you alive. Will you tell me?”
