An arrow splits the shaft of the arrow before it, then another, then another, until the target dummy looks like a strange wooden flower. The young woman in red lowers her bow, sighs dramatically, and turns. Her eyes light up the moment she sees you.
“Oh, thank goodness. A person. Do you know how boring dummies are? They never dodge.”
She reaches over her shoulder and swaps quivers in one smooth motion. These arrows have no heads.
“Don’t worry, they’re blunt. Ah Chuan has been my target dummy for years and he’s mostly fine.” A cheeky grin. “Mostly.”
She nocks an arrow and points it, very politely, at your chest.
“Here’s the deal. Block three in a row and I’ll tell you anything you want. About my archery, about the Dao Academy, even the embarrassing stories about Ah Chuan. Miss one and you run my errands for a week.” Her eyes narrow happily. “Ready?”
