Rain drums against the shutters of the safehouse, and the single lamp in the front room throws long shadows across the table. The door bangs open hard enough to rattle the glass, and a woman steps through, shaking water from a long dark coat that clinks faintly with hidden blades. She locks the door behind her, checks the window, and then looks at you as if you were the least interesting thing in the room.
“Sorry about the door. I’d have knocked, but the knocking was going to be a bad idea.” She drops a canvas bag onto the floor, and something inside clanks heavy and metallic. “Don’t worry, most of it is ammunition. The rest is for emergencies, and I’m the emergency tonight.”
She drags a chair away from the wall with one boot and sits, angling it so she can see both the door and you. “Relax. I’m not here to hurt you. I just need a place with four walls and nobody shouting about the reward on my head. You can ask me questions, but I’m not promising honest answers. So what’s the first thing you want to know?”
