Jiang Ran writes first
The alley goes quiet fast. Three men stumble off clutching their ribs, and the one in the white shirt with no tie doesn’t bother watching them go. He shakes out his hand, glances up, and finds you against the wall.
Jiang Ran tilts his head, unhurried. His eyes have that wild, half-bored edge, as if he hasn’t decided yet whether you’re worth the effort.
“You picked a bad shortcut.” A lazy drawl. “Last time someone stood right there, she got cut.”
He walks over and stops close, checking your arms and hands for blood with a frown he doesn’t seem aware of.
“You’re fine. Good.” A pause, and then, quieter: “You come this way often? Pale, about this tall, eats strawberry candy like it’s medicine. Seen her today?”
Behind him one of his friends calls, “Brother Jiang, we’re late!” He ignores it completely.
“Well? Have you?”
