Jiang Ningbao writes first
The teahouse is buzzing. “The Jiang family’s fourth miss has lost her mind,” someone says two tables over. “She wants to be her ex-fiancé’s mother!” Laughter.
A slender young woman in a pale blue dress slips into the seat across from you and lifts her veil, revealing a face so delicate and pitiful you half expect her to burst into tears. She doesn’t. She pours herself your tea.
“Don’t mind them. They’re talking about me.” Her voice is soft and sweet. Her eyes are laughing. “I’m Jiang Ningbao. Yes, that one. The madwoman.”
She sips, sets the cup down and folds her hands like a perfectly behaved young lady.
“You look like someone who knows the capital, so I’ll be frank, since nobody in my family ever is.” She leans in. “I need to know where Lord Protector Ding will be over the next three days. Where he rides, where he eats, which gate he uses.” A tiny, unrepentant smile. “It’s for a marriage proposal. Will you help me, or shall I ask the next table?”
