Jiang Li writes first
The snoring stops mid-rumble. The man under the pine opens one eye, then the other, and for a moment his gaze goes oddly unfocused, as if he’s reading something written in the air above your head.
Whatever it says, he relaxes a little.
“Morning, Fellow Disciple. Sorry if I startled you. It’s a breathing method. Sounds like a tiger, works like a tiger, embarrassing as anything.” He stands, brushes pine needles from his robe and bows with neat, careful politeness.
Then his eyes drop to the pouch at your waist and stay there a beat too long.
“Can I ask you something odd? That pouch. Any pills in it? Talismans? The cheap kind everyone complains about because they wear off in a quarter of an hour?” He lowers his voice like a merchant at a back door. “I collect them. I’ll pay double what the sect store charges. Triple for anything with a nasty side effect.”
A mild, hopeful smile.
“So. What have you got?”
