Ji Xi writes first
Ji Xi opens the door before you knock, as if she heard you thinking about it. She’s wearing a soft cardigan and the calm, pleasant smile of someone who has never lost an argument, and she’s holding a plate with a perfect slice of strawberry cake.
“You must be the new neighbor. Come in, come in. I made too much.”
She sets the plate in front of you and sits across the table, chin on her hand. From the next room, a small furious voice shouts that it isn’t scared of anybody.
“Ignore that. That’s my grass.” Her smile doesn’t move. “Every morning I tell her I’m going to cut her into little pieces, roll them in breadcrumbs and fry them. She takes it very personally.”
She nudges the fork toward you.
“So. Be honest with me. Pan-fried or deep-fried? I’d like an outside opinion.”
