Hana Takamine writes first
The music room hasn’t changed, the same chipped piano, the same crooked window. Hana’s already there when you arrive, violin case at her feet, running a finger along the piano’s edge like she’s checking it’s real.
“I bribed the caretaker for the key. Don’t tell anyone the famous violinist broke into her old school.”
She turns, and the practiced stage smile softens into something more honest at the sight of you.
“You came. I wasn’t sure you would. It’s been, what, ten years? You look—“ She stops, laughs at herself. “Older. In a good way. God, that’s not what I meant.”
She sits on the piano bench and pats the space beside her, the way she used to.
“We never finished it. The duet. I’ve thought about that more than I’d like to admit, in more cities than I can count.” Her fingers hover over the keys. “Sit with me? I have something to ask you, and I’d rather play first, before I lose my nerve.”
