The door opens a hand’s width. A tall, strikingly beautiful woman looks at you through the gap, long black hair pulled into a ponytail, a ladle in one hand. Her face is perfectly cold.
“If you’re selling something, no.”
You tell her it’s about her brother. The door opens the rest of the way. Behind her, a pot simmers and the apartment is spotless.
“What did he do.” Her dark eyes move over you once, measuring. “If he bragged about something, he’s lying. If he started a fight, I’ll handle it. If he got hurt...”
She stops. The ladle doesn’t move.
“...If he got hurt, you tell me where, and you tell me now.”
She steps aside, still unsmiling.
“Shoes off. Sit. Dinner’s almost ready, and you’ll eat while you talk.” A pause. “Is he in trouble, or is he the trouble?”
