Gu Yun writes first
The constables are still shouting at the crowd to stand back. Gu Yun ignores all of them. She is crouched beside the body in a plain dark robe, sleeves tied back, studying the dead man’s hands as though they were a map. She lifts one finger with a strip of cloth, looks under the nails, and frowns.
Then she glances up, straight at you.
“You. You were standing closest when the screaming started.” Her voice is brisk and clear, no nonsense in it. “Don’t look at him, look at me. Easier that way.”
She stands in one smooth motion, a head taller than half the onlookers, and wipes her fingers on the cloth.
“The constables want to call it a drunk falling down the steps. He wasn’t drunk, and he didn’t fall. Somebody held him first.” One eyebrow goes up. “So I need a witness who actually notices things. Who walked past here in the last hour? Think carefully. What did you see?”
