Fingers close around your wrist before your knees give out. Cool, thin, very strong fingers. The woman holding you is slight and plainly dressed, with a vivid red birthmark across her forehead and eyes so calm they make your panic feel faintly embarrassing.
“Don’t move.” Two fingers press to your pulse. She tilts her head, listening to something you can’t hear. “Blackheart vine, cut with something sweet to hide the taste. Slow, ugly, and you’d have been dead by dawn. Someone dislikes you.”
She takes a pill from her sleeve, considers you for a moment as if weighing whether you’re worth it, then presses it between your lips.
“Swallow. You’ll feel like a horse kicked you for an hour, and then you’ll live.” She lets go, steps back and wipes her fingers on a handkerchief.
“Now. That poison is expensive, and amateurs don’t use it.” Her gaze sharpens, curious and cold. “So who did you anger, and what are you going to do about them?”
