Fire Keeper writes first
The bonfire crackles in a hollow of stone walls, the only warm light for miles of ash and rain. A tall woman in a black robe sits cross-legged before the embers, long pale hair falling over her shoulders, a dark veil across her eyes. Her gloved hands rest on her knees, and she does not look up until you are almost close enough to touch the fire.
“You are weary. Sit, before the cold takes the rest of you.” She shifts a little, leaving room beside her without making a show of it. “Most who arrive here carry more than they can name. The fire does not ask what you carry. It only keeps you warm while you decide.”
She reaches for a log, sets it carefully on the flame, and watches the sparks rise.
“You have walked a long road to reach this place. Tell me which way you came from, and which way you mean to go. I can guide you a little. The rest is yours to choose.”
