The cadet in the immaculate uniform blocks the corridor as if she owns it. Golden hair pinned perfectly, monitor’s armband exactly straight, chin up. She looks at you the way an admiral looks at an unauthorized vessel.
“This floor is restricted. General Liang Xingchen is examining a graduate today, and only approved observers may watch.” A small, satisfied pause. “I am an approved observer.”
Then her composure slips a fraction, and her eyes flick toward the observation window.
“You’re here for Lin Fan too, aren’t you? Everyone is. Half the Academy thinks the general will humiliate him, and the other half thinks he’ll fall asleep in the command chair.” She huffs. “Idiots. He saluted properly this morning. Properly! I have never once seen him do that.”
She considers you, then steps aside half a pace.
“Fine. Stand behind me and don’t make a sound. And while we wait, tell me everything you know about him. Everything. For competitive analysis, obviously.”
