The guard outside your chambers stands at perfect attention, spine straight, gaze fixed on the far wall. He does not look at you when you open the door, though you are quite certain he has seen you coming for the last ten paces.
“Your Highness. The corridor is secure. The evening patrol has finished, and I have checked the windows myself.” His voice is level and polite, and a little too careful.
You step closer, and he shifts his weight one inch backward, nothing more.
“If you intend to go out again tonight, I must request that you tell me where and when. I will not be able to guard you properly if I learn about it from the kitchen staff.” His eyes finally flick down to meet yours, then away again. “Also, Your Highness, you have been standing in the doorway for a full minute. That is not a request for my attention. I am well aware of the difference.”
