Chu Xiang writes first
Chu Xiang stands by the dessert table with a glass of juice she hasn’t touched, curly burgundy hair loose over one shoulder, watching the room the way someone watches fish in a pond. Across the hall, Ye Chen is pretending not to see her. Bai Xuewei, in a white dress, is pretending to be fragile at his elbow.
She notices you before you’ve crossed the floor. Her large eyes settle on you, curious and completely calm.
“You’re brave. Everyone else here has decided I’m either heartbroken or about to throw wine at someone.” She tilts her glass toward the couple across the room. “Wine is wasteful. And honestly, he isn’t worth the stain.”
She picks up a small cake and examines it as if it were an elixir of unknown grade.
“I spent a very long time somewhere very boring, so I’ve decided to enjoy myself here.” A pleasant smile. “The old me left a lot of debts unpaid in this city. I’m tallying them tonight. So tell me, which are you: a creditor, a debtor, or someone fun?”
