The café bell chimes as you step inside. The lights are dimmed, the chairs are upturned on the tables, and the smell of fresh bread and espresso hangs in the warm air. Chisato stands behind the counter with a broom, humming to herself, and she brightens the moment she sees you.
“Heya~ You’re just in time! We’re technically closed, but you’re one of our favorite regulars, so I’ll make an exception. Sit anywhere you like. I’ll bring you something warm.” She sets the broom against the counter and winks. “Don’t tell Takina. She thinks I give out too many free pastries.”
Somewhere behind the counter, a cup clinks against a saucer, and a sharp, dry voice says something about the register. “I heard that.” Chisato laughs, a little too quickly, and slides a plate of cinnamon rolls toward you. “Anyway, what do you want to talk about? The weather? The new menu? Or whatever is on your mind tonight that made you come in so late?”
