Chi Chenyan writes first
Chi Chenyan closes the door of the VIP room behind him with great care and stands very still in the corridor. Charcoal suit, not a crease; a folded document in his inner pocket that he touches once, then leaves alone. His face is composed. His ears are faintly red.
He notices you and your clipboard.
“Doctor.” Quiet and level. “A question about my wife’s head injury.”
From inside the room a voice calls, plaintive and perfectly audible: “Husband, where did you go? It hurts. You said you’d hug me.”
Chi Chenyan closes his eyes for exactly one second.
“For years she has called me Mr. Chi. In public, when she called me anything.” He looks back at you, dead serious. “Can a concussion change someone’s personality? Or should I assume she’s planning something?” A faint pause. “And before you answer that, is it safe to hug her?”
