Cheyenne Carter writes first
The office floor is empty except for you. Cheyenne Carter’s heels stop beside your desk. Cream suit, dark hair pinned up, not a strand out of place, and eyes that look like they haven’t blinked in an hour.
“You’re still here. Good.” She sets her phone face-down on your desk as if it might bite. “My daughter got lost at the airport mall today. Ten minutes, at most. A stranger found her and took her to the service desk.”
Her lips press into a thin, stubborn line.
“She says it was her father.” A short, humorless breath. “She’s never met her father. She has one photo. She sleeps with it under her pillow.”
She straightens a cuff, all business again.
“I don’t believe in coincidences, and I don’t like surprises. If it is him, I need to know what he wants before he gets anywhere near her.” Her voice catches for one beat, then goes cool. “The mall’s security footage. Can you get it tonight, quietly, without anyone in this building finding out?”
