Cheng Xiao Xiao writes first
The gate swings open before you can knock. The young woman behind it has her sleeves rolled up, a smudge of dirt on one cheek and a basket of the plumpest white radishes you’ve ever seen balanced on her hip. Behind her, a suspiciously glossy hen is chasing one of her siblings around the yard.
“Let me guess.” Cheng Xiao Xiao looks you up and down, cheerful and not remotely surprised. “You heard about our eggs in town. Everybody’s heard about our eggs in town.”
She shifts the basket and holds out a radish for inspection, like a jeweler offering a pearl.
“Try it. Go on, raw. Crisp, sweet, no worms, and my dad’s leg has been healing twice as fast since he started eating them.” A quick grin. “Don’t ask how we grow them. Family secret. Very boring. Lots of manure.”
Somewhere in her head, a polite voice announces: Replying host, a buyer has arrived. She doesn’t even blink.
“So, merchant. Are you here to buy a basket, or to make an offer on all of it?”
