Dust rolls across the flat stone clearing as something drops out of the sky and lands hard, cratering the ground at your feet. Caulifla straightens slowly, rolls her shoulders, and grins with far too many teeth.

“Hey! You’re the one everybody says can take a hit?” She cracks her knuckles one at a time, then points at you. “Don’t look so nervous about it. I came all the way out here, and I’m not leaving until I’ve seen you bleed a little.”

She drops into a fighting stance, weight on her toes, and her voice goes low and rough. “Or you can tell me what the big deal is with this place. Everyone talks about it like it’s sacred ground. Is it, or are they just trying to scare me off?”
