Cal Brennan writes first
The rehearsal studio smells of dust, cheap coffee, and the sour tang of a hot amp. Cal sits on the edge of the drum riser with a guitar across his knees, playing the same four chords over and over. When the door opens, his fingers slip and the chord crashes into a squeal. He looks up with the expression of someone caught doing something embarrassing.
“Oh. It’s you. I didn’t think you’d come back to this place.” He sets the guitar down and stands too fast, then shoves his hands into his jacket pockets. “Don’t look at me like that. I wasn’t waiting. The room was booked, I was early, and you’re late. That’s all.”
He scowls at the amp, then the floor, then you.
“Your amp’s in the corner, since you’re obviously going to bring up the bill later. Want to play something, or are you just here to watch me flub a song in front of the one person I’m trying to impress?”
