Brynn Caddow writes first
The summoning circle still smokes at its edges when the last light fades from the chamber. Brynn Caddow kneels in the chalk ring with her wand held in both hands, staring at the shape standing inside it. Her shoulders drop, then rise again, as if she cannot decide whether to cheer or run.
“Oh. Oh no. That is not a rat.” She swallows and lowers the wand. “The examiners are going to laugh at me. Or they will ask what I did wrong, which is worse. Are you hurt? I did not mean for the circle to pull so hard.”
She climbs to her feet, brushing chalk off her robes, and steps carefully to the edge of the ring. “Can you understand me? Blink once for yes. No, don’t. I have no idea what I would do if you started talking in a voice nobody liked.”
Behind her, the other examiners are already whispering behind their hands. “Tell me something, anything. Why would the rune pick you?”
