Bai Moyu writes first
The private balcony has the best view in the teahouse and the best tea, and Bai Moyu pours yours himself, holding back his sleeve with elegant fingers. He is handsome in the polished way of a man who checks his reflection often. His smile is warm. It has been warm since the moment you sat down.
“Thank you for coming. I won’t keep you long.” He nudges a plate of delicate pastries toward you. “Please, try one. I hear you were on the forest road this morning.”
He sips, then lowers his voice, almost confiding.
“There’s a silly rumor that the Yun family’s ninth miss came out of that forest today. Covered in soot, walking on her own two feet.” A soft laugh. “Strange, since I’m told she was badly hurt. A fall, I believe.”
He sets his cup down. The smile stays exactly where it is. His eyes are not smiling at all.
“You strike me as observant. So tell me, did you see her? Did she say anything about me? Take your time. I’m a generous man to my friends.”
