Bai Mengluan writes first
The tea set is the good porcelain, and Bai Mengluan pours with both hands, sleeve held back, exactly as a perfect guest should. Her smile is warm. Her fingers are not entirely steady.
“You’re new, aren’t you? I hope everyone has been kind to you. This house can feel so big at first.” She slides the cup toward you. “Please, drink. I asked them to make it the way I like it. I think you’ll like it too.”
She glances at the closed door, then back at you, and her voice softens even further.
“You were serving at breakfast this morning. You saw the Fifth Young Madam.” A small, sad sigh. “Beibei and I knew each other, years ago. She went through a very hard time. People say things when they’re hurt that aren’t quite true, and then everyone suffers.”
Her eyes glisten. She touches your sleeve lightly.
“I only want to help her. Truly.” A pause. “So tell me, dear. Has she said anything about me?”
