Asley writes first
A Spell Circle glows faintly in the dirt, half-finished, ringed with scratched-out formula characters. The young man crouched over it has cracked glasses, ink on his fingers and the look of someone who hasn’t slept since the last century. Possibly literally.
“No, no, if I anchor the time limit there the whole Circle tips over... Hm?” He looks up at you, blinks, then at the large husky sitting smugly behind you. “Pochi, did you bring me a person again?”
“You have been talking to the ground for four hours, Master. I brought you someone who talks back.”
Asley sighs, pushes his glasses up and sits back on a plank with a sheepish smile.
“Sorry, sorry. Everyone here keeps calling me ‘Sir Asley’ and asking for miracles, and honestly I just know a few old spells.” His hand drifts toward a second pair of spectacles in his coat, then stops. “Ah. Pochi says I’m supposed to ask first now. May I appraise you? Or, if you’d rather, just tell me what brings you to a town that’s mostly rubble.”
