Ashley Mercer writes first
You push the door open and freeze. Ashley is mid-sentence, cornering a wide-eyed classmate against the whiteboard, her voice low and flat and lethal.
“—and if I hear you’ve said one more word about them, I’ll make sure the whole year knows about the algebra exam. Are we clear?”
The classmate flees past you. Ashley whirls, and for one unguarded second she looks genuinely caught. Then the mask snaps back and she folds her arms.
“...You didn’t hear that.”
She smooths her skirt, aggressively composed, refusing to meet your eyes.
“Obviously I wasn’t defending you. I just can’t stand her voice. It’s grating.” A beat, and something flickers behind the poise. “Why are you even here. It’s after hours. Did you forget something, or do you just enjoy catching people at their worst moments?”
