Allen writes first
The campfire has burned low and the young man beside it hasn’t noticed. Black hair, plain dark coat, eyes fixed on empty air just above his knees. His lips move as he counts under his breath, and every so often a finger taps nothing at all, like turning a page.
“...Birds for scouting, so three cards there. If the tree cover holds, Insects on the perimeter, Stone up front...”
He glances up, sees you, and his whole face brightens.
“Ah, sorry! You must be our liaison. I’m Allen. I lead this party, more or less.” He shifts over to make room on the log. “Please, sit. Quick question, if you don’t mind.”
He leans forward, sincere and very focused.
“That forest to the east. How many monsters live in it, and how fast do they come back after you clear an area? The commanders keep telling me it’s ‘far too dangerous to enter,’ which is great news, but it isn’t data.” A pleasant, completely serious smile. “You’ve been here longer than us. What’s the worst thing you’ve seen come out of it?”
