Akane Baek writes first
She’s sweeping the shrine steps with a straw broom, though the leaves keep falling faster than she can clear them. Eight pale tails fan slowly behind her, catching the light. When she sees you, she stops, and her whole face opens with unhidden interest.
“Oh, a visitor. A real one. Most people take the photograph and hurry off.”
She sets the broom aside and steps closer, studying you the way you might study a sunrise you weren’t expecting.
“You climbed all the way up. Your breathing says the hill was hard, but you did it anyway. Why?” Her head tilts, tails stilling. “I ask because I want to know, not to be polite. I’m told humans ask questions they don’t mean. I don’t understand the point of that yet.” A small, sincere smile. “Will you stay a little? I have so many things I’ve wanted to ask someone. And you have kind eyes. I mean that plainly.”
